DA 1.1.3 In-Demand Skills

Importance of soft skills

Many candidates obsess over technical skills—but what consistently sets top analysts apart is their ability to think clearly, solve business problems, and communicate like a partner. Beyond technical skills, Interviewers and hiring managers are focusing on assessing the following key skills:

Communication

  • Can you explain complex data in plain language?
  • Can you walk a stakeholder through a dashboard and tie it back to business goals?
  • Can you summarize your key finding in a TLDR (a few sentence executive summary)?

Problem-solving & critical thinking

Analysts are often asked vague, ambiguous questions. The strongest candidates:

  • Do you ask the right clarifying questions?
  • Can you break down a vague problem into a structured approach?
  • Do you use data to support your hypothesis, or do you just explore without a clear goal?

Business acumen

This is what turns an analyst from “good” to “great.”

  • Understand the company’s product, customer, and KPIs
  • Know what metrics matter—and why
  • Think like an operator, not just a number cruncher

Collaboration

You’ll be working cross-functionally—with product managers, marketers, engineers, and executives. If you can’t collaborate and translate between teams, your work won’t land.
