Recognizing the Core Business Problem
Premium
One of the first challenges in a data modeling interview is to clearly define the core problem statement. This involves:
- Identifying the primary business objective
- Determining the key stakeholders and their needs
- Outlining the scope of the data model
- Explicitly stating what is out of scope
For example, consider this scenario:
"Design a data model for an e-commerce platform's order management system."
Your first step should be to clarify the scope:
"The model will cover the order lifecycle from placement to delivery, including product information, customer details, and payment processing. It will not include inventory management or customer service interactions."
Tips for scope definition
- Ask clarifying questions about the business context
- Make explicit assumptions and verify them with the interviewer
- Use a whiteboard or paper to visually outline the scope
- Prioritize key areas if the scope seems too broad for the interview time
