Introduction to Behavioral Questions

Premium

Every FDE interview loop has behavioral questions, from the recruiter screen to the final hiring manager round. Across all of it, the company is building a picture of who you are.

What separates this from a standard engineering loop is how much of it is about customers. A customer sits on the other side of most of the FDE job, so your customer handling has to be on par with your technical skill.

Do you have an answer to each of these?

If not, don’t worry. That's what this course is for.

Your answers decide more than you'd expect. Interviewers use them to judge whether you fit the culture. Leadership uses them to judge whether you'd be easy to manage. Peers use them to judge whether they'd want you on the team. Between them, that's whether you get an offer and at what level.

They are assessing you as a person.

What they ask depends on what the company values. Anthropic is big on safety, so its questions push into ethics:

  • Tell me about a time you had to build something that went against your values.
  • Tell me about a time you faced a moral or ethical dilemma at work.

The culture of the company you're joining shapes both the questions you'll get and the traits they're listening for. To see what your target company asks, filter our question database by company.

Don't start drafting answers yet. Read the next lesson first so you prep in the most efficient way.
