Exercise: Take-Home Exercise

Premium

Below is a sample take-home assignment similar to what you might receive in a product designer interview.

Note: The industry is moving away from these, so it's likely you won't run into one, but it's good to be prepared just in case.

Prompt: Imagine you’re the designer of Multiply, a new homework help website for high-schoolers. We’d like to create an onboarding page for new users to determine what subjects they need help with - e.g. Algebra, Chemistry, English, etc.

  • We want to support a broad set of topics (20+) on our platform

    • Math
      • Geometry
      • Algebra
      • Calculus
    • Language
      • English
      • Spanish
      • Chinese
    • Science
      • Physics
      • Robotics
      • Chemistry
      • Biology
    • etc.
  • Assume the user has already logged in or created their account, and now we’re collecting more information about their interests to personalize their experience.

  • Some helpful statistics:

    • From a user survey, we know 50% of our users want help with Math, specifically Calculus
    • Based on analytics, we know 30% of users sign up with a mobile browser
  • Our success metrics:

    • % of users who complete onboarding
    • % of users who select at least one topic to learn about

Deliverables

  1. A lightweight exploration of user flows (low-fidelity or flow diagrams)
  2. One or two high-fidelity mockups showcasing design polish and craft
  3. Brief explanation of your design decisions and assumptions (1-2 paragraphs is fine)

Note: It’s perfectly ok to use stock images, icons, or components (but please credit if doing so!)
