Introduction to Technical Questions
Technical questions in cybersecurity can feel broad. The field covers everything from low level networking to cloud IAM to secure architecture patterns. What makes interviews challenging is that they draw from two different types of knowledge.
- Fundamentals. The theory you learn from school or textbooks.
- Experience-based knowledge. The practical intuition you gain by doing the work.
Because of that mix, many candidates make the same mistake: they over-index on studying textbooks for months, only to stumble during the interview. Not because they aren’t smart, but because textbook knowledge can’t cover for a lack of practical exposure, and interviewers can immediately tell the difference.
Here’s the encouraging part: You probably don’t need as much textbook knowledge as you think. You need more practical intuition.

What to expect
Most cybersecurity technical interviews fall into one of three categories:
1. Quiz-style questions
These are the quick checks, for example:
“What’s the difference between TCP and UDP?”
They resemble college exam questions and help interviewers gauge your baseline knowledge. Success depends on knowing what to study, which we cover in this course. Fundamental topics such as networking and cryptography are often tested through these quiz style questions.
2. Scenario-based questions
These test how you think in real situations. For example:
“How would you perform a threat model for a web application that processes personal data?”
“You find hard-coded credentials in a repo. What immediate steps do you take?”
Scenario questions require structure. You need repeatable ways to break down problems, avoid blind spots, and show that you have handled real issues before. Interviewers often use these questions to test practical skills such as secure coding patterns, detection engineering, automation, or applying generative AI in security work.
3. Security system design questions
These assess your ability to design secure systems from the ground up. For example:
“Design a secure login flow for millions of users.”
