Most data center technician interview processes run two to five stages: a recruiter screen, one or more technical rounds, and a behavioral round, sometimes with a hands-on or scenario-based component. 

Staffing-firm and contract roles tend to run short (a recruiter call plus one hiring-manager interview). Hyperscaler roles run longer and are more structured:

Name the components a server needs to run. 

A complete answer covers the CPU, motherboard, RAM, storage (HDD or SSD), power supply, network interface card, cooling fans, and the BIOS or UEFI firmware that runs POST at boot. Microsoft candidates report this as a common opener, so treat it as a warm-up you should answer without hesitating.

How do you safely replace a failed hard drive or RAM module? 

Power and static are the two things interviewers want you to mention. Confirm the component and slot from the ticket or management console, use a grounded wrist strap, seat the replacement fully, and confirm the system recognizes it in the BIOS or baseboard management controller before closing out.

Walk me through troubleshooting a server that won't power on. 

Interviewers want to see a repeatable method here. Check power at the PDU and the supply LEDs, reseat power and components, read the diagnostic LEDs or the BMC (iDRAC, iLO, or IPMI) for a fault code, then escalate with your notes if it's a board-level failure.

How do you handle components to prevent electrostatic discharge? 

Use a grounded wrist strap, keep parts in antistatic bags until you install them, work on an ESD mat, and touch bare metal on the chassis before handling a board. Mention that ESD damage is often latent: the part works today and fails weeks later, which is why the discipline matters.

  • Trace outward with ping and traceroute

Naming DNS as a likely culprit early shows you understand the resolution path.

Start at the physical layer and move up. Check the cable seating and for bend or damage, confirm the port isn't in the wrong VLAN or administratively shut, look for a speed or duplex mismatch, verify transceiver compatibility on fiber, then move to the switch config. Also mention that you document each step, so the next shift isn't repeating your work.

What's the difference between DNS and DHCP? 

DHCP assigns a device its IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server when it joins the network. DNS resolves a hostname to an IP address once the device is on the network. One hands out addresses; the other translates names.

What's the difference between single-mode and multi-mode fiber, and when do you use each? 

Single-mode has a small (roughly 9-micron) core, uses a laser source, and carries signal over long distances, so it's used between buildings and over campus runs. Multi-mode has a larger core (50 or 62.5 micron), uses cheaper LED or VCSEL optics, and runs short distances, so it's common for rack-to-rack and in-row links. Also mention the importance of keeping connectors clean and respecting bend radius.

How do you approach a large cabling job, and how do you find a bad patch-panel port? 

Plan the runs, label both ends, keep to bend radius, and use velcro instead of zip ties so you can service the bundle later. To find a bad port, use a tone-and-probe kit and a cable certifier or, on fiber, a visual fault locator, and test every run rather than trusting the label.

Power, cooling, and facilities questions & answers

Power, cooling, and facilities questions cover the data center power chain (utility feed, transfer switch, UPS, PDUs), redundancy models like N+1 and 2N, PUE, and hot aisle/cold aisle containment. 

These questions separate candidates who only know server hardware from those who understand the facility around it.

Walk me through the data center power chain from the utility feed to the server. 

Utility power comes in at medium voltage and steps down through a transformer. An automatic transfer switch moves the load to a generator if utility power fails. A UPS conditions the power and bridges the gap on battery until the generator is stable. From there it runs to power distribution units, then to the rack and the dual power supplies in each server.

What do N, N+1, and 2N redundancy mean? 

  • N is exactly the capacity the load needs
  • N+1 adds one spare unit, so a single failure or a maintenance window doesn't take the load down
  • 2N is a fully mirrored second system with no shared components

The point of the question is that in an N+1 or 2N design, a single failure is a planned, recoverable event rather than an emergency.

What is PUE, and what's a good value? 

Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is total facility energy divided by the energy that reaches IT equipment, so 1.0 is the theoretical floor and lower is better. The Uptime Institute's 2025 Global Data Center Survey put the self-reported global average annual PUE at 1.54 (down from 1.56 in 2024). Google reports a 2025 fleet-wide, trailing-twelve-month average of 1.09, self-reported to its own measurement boundary and among the best in the industry, with some individual sites as low as 1.04.

Explain hot aisle/cold aisle containment and why it matters. 

Racks are arranged so server intakes face a cold aisle and exhausts face a hot aisle. Containment (physical barriers, blanking panels in empty rack slots) keeps the cold supply air from mixing with hot exhaust. It matters because mixing forces the cooling system to work harder and creates hot spots, which raises PUE and risks equipment.

What temperature should a data hall run at, and what do you do if a server is overheating? 

ASHRAE's recommended range for standard equipment classes (A1 to A4) is 18 to 27 degrees Celsius (64.4 to 80.6 Fahrenheit), per its TC 9.9 Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments. High-density and AI hardware falls under the newer H1 class, which recommends a tighter 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. If a single server overheats, check its fans and airflow path and for missing blanking panels or a blocked intake before assuming a room-level cooling problem, and escalate to the shift lead if temperatures keep climbing.

A PDU breaker trips. What do you do? 

Before resetting anything, check the load on the circuit and look and smell for a fault to tell a genuine overload from a nuisance trip. If it trips again after a reset, treat it as a fault and escalate to facilities or an electrician rather than forcing it back on.

Behavioral and situational questions & answers

Behavioral and situational questions ask how you handle incidents under pressure, mistakes, competing priorities, and shift work, and interviewers weigh them as heavily as the technical rounds. 

Interviewers are checking for safety instinct, calm troubleshooting, and reliability. Prepare structured answers and use real data center examples where you can.

Tell me about a time you resolved an incident under pressure. 

Pick a specific incident (a failed drive during a rebuild, a cooling alarm, a power event), describe what you did step by step, and end with the measurable result. Interviewers want to see that you stayed methodical and communicated while you worked.

Describe a mistake you made during maintenance and how you handled it. 

Choose a real mistake, own it plainly, and spend most of your answer on what you changed so it wouldn't recur: a checklist, a second-person verification, a runbook update. Interviewers care less about the error than about whether you built something to prevent the next one.

You have three tickets at once: a failed drive on a test server, an overheating rack, and a client-impacting network outage. How do you prioritize? 

Rank by scope and trajectory of impact. The client-impacting outage and the overheating rack both threaten live service and get attention first, with the overheating rack often ahead because it's getting worse by the minute. The failed drive on a test server can wait. Also mention that you'd flag the situation to your shift lead so nothing gets dropped.

How do you feel about shift work, nights, and on-call rotations? 

Be honest and specific about your preferences and availability. Data center operations run 24/7, and postings from Amazon and Google state night, weekend, and on-call expectations plainly. Showing up reliably for nights and weekends is a core part of the job, and interviewers want to know you'll stay.

Why do you want to work in data centers? 

Connect a genuine interest (hands-on hardware, the scale of the infrastructure, a clear path from technician to engineer) to why you'll stick with the shift work. Generic answers hurt you here; specific ones about the work stand out.

Company-specific data center technician interview questions

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft each run the data center technician interview differently on top of the shared fundamentals: Amazon leans on Leadership Principles, Google on Linux and hardware depth, and Microsoft on a lighter networking-and-cabling round.
