How to Answer "Why Deutsche Bank?" Interview Question (2026 Guide)
Investment Banking
Exponent Team • Last updated Deutsche Bank earned Euromoney's Europe's Best Investment Bank award for 2025 and hit its full-year revenue target of approximately 32 billion euros. None of that will show up in your answer if you have not done the research.
What Interviewers Are Really Asking
Deutsche Bank has had a complicated decade. Your answer needs to show you understand where the firm is now, not where it was five years ago.
| Dimension | What They Are Evaluating |
|---|---|
| Research Depth | Do you know what the firm actually looks like in 2025 and 2026, not 2018? |
| Self-Awareness | Have you matched your interests to Deutsche Bank's specific product and regional strengths? |
| Differentiation | Can you explain why Deutsche Bank and not Barclays, UBS, or BNP Paribas? |
| Commitment Signal | Is this a considered choice or a fallback after other European banks passed? |
A weak answer: "Deutsche Bank is a leading European investment bank with a strong global presence." A strong answer is: "Deutsche Bank hit record full-year profits in 2025, was named Europe's Best Investment Bank by Euromoney, and originated 71% more in advisory and underwriting revenues in Q4 2024 than in the same quarter the year before."
How to Structure Your Answer
Three parts. Ninety seconds.
The Hook (10-15 Seconds)
Open with the Euromoney recognition, the revenue performance, or the Numis integration. Specific, verifiable, current.
The Fit (30-40 Seconds)
Name the group or region you want to work in, and a deal if you have one. Explain why your background and goals point to Deutsche Bank specifically.
The Close (15-20 Seconds)
Close directly. Be clear that this is a real choice, not a default.
What Makes Deutsche Bank Different
The Global Hausbank Strategy
Deutsche Bank operates under an explicit mission to be the global Hausbank for its clients — the first point of contact for lending, hedging, bond issuance, and M&A, year after year. That continuity creates a different quality of client knowledge than banks that win a mandate, execute it, and move on.
Deutsche Numis and UK Coverage
Deutsche Bank completed the acquisition of Numis in late 2023 and rebranded it Deutsche Numis, covering more than 300 UK corporates and becoming the preferred corporate broker to the FTSE blue chip community. Adding that ongoing advisory capability to Deutsche Bank's balance sheet created a platform that did not exist before 2023.
Origination and Advisory Momentum
Fourth-quarter 2024 saw origination and advisory revenue rise 71% year over year, and the bank set a strategic goal to win mandates for deals worth at least $500 million and to focus private equity advisory on transactions worth more than $1 billion. For analysts, that translates into working on fewer but more significant transactions rather than grinding through volume.
European Financing Leadership
Deutsche Bank jumped several places in the European loan league tables in 2024 and 2025, driven by high-profile acquisition financings including deals for AutoScout24, Motel One, and a multibillion-euro revolving credit for Mercedes-Benz. Clients increasingly want a single bank to coordinate both advisory and the debt structure, and Deutsche Bank's position in European loans allows it to offer that integrated service.
Asia Pacific Recognition
FinanceAsia named Deutsche Bank Asia Pacific's M&A House of the Year for 2024, and the firm closed over 30 deals across Asia Pacific in 2024. The Blackstone-AirTrunk deal — where Deutsche Bank served as both adviser and financing arranger — is the clearest demonstration of that capability in practice.
Recent Deals You Can Reference
- Blackstone acquisition of AirTrunk (A$24 billion, 2024): Deutsche Bank served as one of Blackstone's financial advisers and helped arrange approximately A$5.5 billion in acquisition financing. FinanceAsia recognized this as the Best Private Equity Deal, Best Property Deal, and Best Infrastructure Deal in APAC for 2024.
- Zegona acquisition of Vodafone Spain (5 billion euros, completed May 2024): Deutsche Bank was the lead arranger on 4.2 billion euros in debt financing and sole lead on the US dollar portion of the term loan B.
- Mercedes-Benz revolving credit facility (multibillion euros, 2024-2025): Deutsche Bank arranged a large revolving credit for the German automaker, reinforcing its position in European large-cap corporate financing.
- AutoScout24 acquisition financing (2024): Deutsche Bank provided acquisition financing for AutoScout24, contributing to its climb in European loan league tables.
- Motel One acquisition financing (2024): Additional European acquisition financing that supported the firm's loan league table position.
- German cross-border M&A advisory: Deutsche Bank retained a commanding position in German corporate M&A, serving as the primary adviser on multiple cross-border transactions involving German corporates in 2024 and 2025.
Culture and Career Development
CEO Christian Sewing joined Deutsche Bank as a 19-year-old apprentice and rose through risk management and corporate banking before becoming CEO, shaping a leadership style focused on operational execution over institutional celebrity. The results in 2025 were strong: record full-year profit before tax, revenues of 32.1 billion euros, and a return on tangible equity exceeding 10%.
Common Mistakes
The Generic Prestige Answer
"Deutsche Bank is a well-respected European investment bank." This applies equally to Barclays, BNP Paribas, and HSBC. The Numis integration, the Hausbank strategy, and the Euromoney award are real differentiators — use them.
The Empty Flattery Answer
"I admire Deutsche Bank's resilience and commitment to its strategy." If you admire the strategy, explain what the strategy is. Vague admiration signals you do not have specific reasons.
Rambling
Candidates who are not sure why they want Deutsche Bank often compensate by talking a lot — mentioning Europe, Germany, the global network, and the Numis deal in no particular order. Structure saves you: hook, fit, close.
Sample Answers
M&A Advisory Example
"The thing that made Deutsche Bank stand out to me was the combination of the Numis acquisition and the Euromoney recognition. Deutsche Numis now covers more than 300 UK corporates, and that coverage feeds into M&A mandates at the FTSE blue chip level. Euromoney named Deutsche Bank Europe's Best Investment Bank for 2025, which puts the firm ahead of every other European bank in an independent assessment. My background is in UK corporate law, where I spent two years advising on M&A transactions before deciding I wanted to be on the financial advisory side. The Deutsche Numis platform is where those two skill sets come together, and I have not found another bank where that combination is this clear."
Why it works: The candidate uses specific verified facts, makes a logical case for Deutsche Numis, and ties in relevant background.
Leveraged Finance and Acquisition Financing Example
"What I found most interesting about Deutsche Bank was the work on the Zegona-Vodafone Spain transaction. Deutsche Bank was the lead arranger on 4.2 billion euros in debt and the sole lead on the dollar term loan B — a complicated cross-border financing with equity, leverage, and bridge components all coordinated by one bank. I want to work on exactly that kind of deal. My internship was in the leveraged finance group at a regional bank, where I worked on smaller sponsor-backed transactions. I want to see how that work scales to cross-border deals at the European level, and Deutsche Bank's leveraged finance team is where I think I can do that."
Why it works: The candidate knows the deal in detail, understands what made it technically interesting, and connects it to specific prior experience.
APAC Coverage Example
"I spent two years living in Singapore and developed a serious interest in Asia Pacific deal-making. The FinanceAsia recognition of Deutsche Bank as APAC's M&A House of the Year for 2024 caught my attention, and the AirTrunk advisory confirmed the substance behind it. Deutsche Bank was one of Blackstone's advisers on a A$24 billion acquisition — the largest Australian infrastructure deal of the year — and also arranged A$5.5 billion in financing alongside the advisory mandate. That is the Hausbank model working in practice in Asia. I want to work in APAC coverage, and this is the European bank that has built the most credible position there."
Why it works: The candidate uses a real deal with a real value, demonstrates geographic focus, and explains the Hausbank model in practice.
Tips for Answering
Address the History Directly or Implicitly
Some interviewers will probe whether you are aware of Deutsche Bank's difficult stretch between 2015 and 2020. Be prepared to speak to the restructuring under Sewing and the results since, framing the history as context for the current strength rather than a reason for concern.
Have a Deal Ready
The Zegona-Vodafone Spain financing and the AirTrunk advisory are both citable with specific values. For the Vodafone Spain deal, know that Deutsche Bank was both sole lead on the dollar tranche and lead arranger on the euro portion — an unusual level of concentration on a cross-border deal.
Tailor to Your Division
The Deutsche Numis UK advisory answer is different from the leveraged finance answer, which is different from the APAC M&A answer. Know which group you are interviewing for and make sure your deal reference and personal background connect to that group's work.
