TikTok Data Scientist Interview Guide

Updated by TikTok candidates

As the leading destination for short-form video content, TikTok is dedicated to “inspiring creativity and bringing joy.”

Data scientists help solve the technical and statistical challenges of TikTok’s platform through machine learning models, algorithms, and frameworks.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, have strong technical skills, and are open to working with a global workforce, TikTok might be a good fit for you. In this guide, we cover what working as a TikTok data scientist (DS) entails and go through the hiring process step by step. We also share tips and strategies to help you ace the interview.

This guide was written with the help of a senior data scientist at TikTok.

What does a TikTok DS do?

As an immensely popular social media platform, features such as monetization, analytics, and user safety are critical to TikTok’s success.

Data scientists identify, develop, and deploy models and algorithms to power strategy and decision-making around TikTok’s platform and other products, including TikTok Ads and TikTok Shop.

According to the senior DS we spoke with, data science work at TikTok is truly wide-ranging—in large part because of the company’s flat organizational structure.

In fact, they shared, “Everyone has a say in innovation. It’s not just top-down.”

Candidates for TikTok DS roles should be prepared to work on multidisciplinary teams and be in regular communication with engineers, product designers and managers, quality assurance, and business partners.

Due to the fast-paced nature of the company, data scientists typically work on tight timelines to create advanced, data-driven solutions.

The day-to-day specifics may depend on their role, but all data scientists can expect to put their quantitative technical skill sets to use while working with a variety of stakeholders.

In terms of compensation, TikTok DS salaries range from $199,000 to $287,000 per year, including bonus and stock.

What are the typical job requirements for a TikTok DS?

These are the most common education and experience levels mentioned by candidates and in TikTok job postings.

Education

Bachelor’s degrees (specifically in computer science or a related field such as sociology, statistics, or operations research) are required for all DS roles, although master’s/PhDs are preferred. However, it’s still possible to get hired as a TikTok data scientist even if your educational background isn’t a perfect fit. As long as you have the required hard skills, you can be a strong candidate.

Experience

Depending on the level of role seniority, 2-5+ years of previous experience is generally required for TikTok DS roles.

Experience can replace educational background.

Technical competency is by far the most important aspect of your application. According to the senior data scientist we spoke with, “When someone doesn’t have enough experience either in the field or in the subject, it would be very difficult for them to be set up for success inside the company.”

Recommendations before you apply for TikTok DS roles

  • Understand TikTok’s company culture: As a relatively young company compared to established social platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn, TikTok has a very fast-paced environment. According to our source, “TikTok is a very fast-moving and high-intensity company, where a mistake could cost a lot. Things change very frequently.” However, they enjoy the role because of the challenging and interesting data science problems it presents, coupled with a generally supportive team. To get a better idea of whether you might fit in well with TikTok’s culture, look into employee reviews, blog posts, and news articles.
  • Know TikTok: You don’t need to be an active TikTok user, but developing a solid understanding of TikTok’s mission and current events is a great way to show your interest as a candidate. Familiarize yourself with programs like TikTok for Good and TikTok for Developers, and be ready to discuss these in your interviews.
  • Practice for the technical rounds: Although soft skills are important, hard skills are the key to a successful TikTok job application. Get ready for challenging interview questions ranging from product sense to SQL to A/B testing. We cover how to ace these interviews in more depth below.
  • Cultivate a global perspective: TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company founded and based in Beijing, China. Any role that requires Mandarin Chinese will note this in the job description, but most roles require only English proficiency. Still, a willingness and flexibility to work non-traditional working hours is key, since your interviewers (and future collaborators) might be in a different time zone.

Interview Process

TikTok’s DS interviews focus primarily on whether you have the hard skills to keep up with the pace of a company moving at the speed of global media. There are generally four phases involved in the DS interview process:

  • A preliminary recruiter screen (usually 30 minutes) with common behavioral questions
  • A hiring manager screen focused on assessing critical thinking skills, often in the context of product design and metrics
  • An interview loop that consists of 3-4 technical rounds and at least 1 behavioral round
  • A final hiring manager screen for culture fit

In your early screens, expect product analysis and SQL questions as well as behavioral discussions. The interview loop meanwhile tends to feature rigorous questions about SQL, product sense, statistics, A/B testing, and machine learning.

All interviews are conducted virtually. Also note that since TikTok’s workforce is spread out across the globe, your interview may be scheduled for an unconventional time.

According to past candidates, the full TikTok DS interview process can take anywhere from three weeks to two months depending on coordination and scheduling.

Recruiter & Hiring Manager Screens

A conversation with a recruiter is the first step in the TikTok DS interview loop. While TikTok has an in-house recruiting team, the company also occasionally works with recruiting firms to source candidates.

The senior data scientist we spoke with met with an external recruiter first before speaking with one of TikTok’s own recruiters, although this experience may be uncommon.

Regardless of whether you meet with an internal or external recruiter, this first screen consists primarily of behavioral questions. To prepare, practice the following questions:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why TikTok?
  • Why are you looking for a new opportunity?
  • What is your ideal team?
  • What did you do in your last role?
  • Take me through your resume.

You may also receive a short take-home assignment on product analytics. If you’ve applied to a relevant role for your skillset, nothing in this assessment should be concerning. Consider the metrics that you’d use to evaluate different types of features as a data scientist, and how you would articulate a feature rollout plan.

After the recruiter screen is a call with the hiring manager. According to our source, TikTok does not give hiring managers a standardized format or list of questions, so this call may vary significantly between different hiring managers.

However, from their experience, hiring managers generally focus on assessing:

  • Your overall ability to think critically
  • How you approach metrics, e.g., what metrics to prioritize and how metrics affect downstream decisions

During this screen, the hiring manager may present a case study and ask questions like “How do you convince your leadership of [X] based on the situation?”

“They want to see how you are going about convincing stakeholders based on the metrics that are coming up,” the senior data scientist we spoke with said. “Are you just talking about feelings or are you talking about numbers? How are you thinking of sharing that information?”

Technical Interviews

After the initial recruiter and hiring manager screens is a technical loop of 3-4 interviews, running roughly 45 minutes each. Expect dedicated rounds focused on the following topics:

  • Product Sense: TikTok’s data scientists are constantly engaging with product teams to develop, deploy, and upkeep the most effective ML models and algorithms for user experience. Expect to be asked about apps/products that you like and why, as well as how you’d compare them to TikTok’s systems.
  • A/B Testing: Designing and running experiments is a key part of data science innovation at TikTok. Make sure you’re familiar with A/B tests and other popular user research methods, as you’ll likely be asked to evaluate potential changes to a product in this way.
  • SQL: Regardless of team, all data scientists must analyze and translate data to make it actionable and useful for other parts of the product and company at large. Deep familiarity with SQL is essential to the technical interview, as you may be expected to code on the spot.
  • Machine Learning: Make sure you’re incredibly comfortable with the programming languages, data processing tools, and anything else included in your prospective job listing. As a data scientist at TikTok, looking at both the big picture and specific use cases for complex machine learning systems is critical to success.

Past candidates recommend practicing data structures and algorithms questions of medium and hard difficulty to get ready for TikTok’s technical interviews. For extra support, consider checking out Exponent’s SQL Interviews Course.

Additionally, some analytical questions worth practicing include:

When working through technical problems, don’t forget the value of communication.

Talk through your thought process to demonstrate a genuine understanding of the question at hand, while remembering to stay on task with the limited amount of time you have.

Behavioral

In addition to the technical rounds, TikTok’s interview loop also typically includes 1-2 dedicated behavioral rounds to assess your culture fit.

However, there are exceptions from time to time. The senior data scientist we spoke with shared that if the team is in a hurry, they may shorten the interview loop altogether and combine the rounds: “They might say, ‘We will only do three rounds and split between behavioral and technical.’ Half of the interview could be behavioral, and the other half would be technical.”

Whether your interview features a dedicated behavioral round or just a few behavioral questions, we recommend preparing to give responses using the STAR format. This involves structuring your answers as follows: situation, task, action, and result.

Below are a few behavioral questions candidates have reported getting:

We also advise reviewing ByteDance and TikTok’s company values, which include:

  • Always Day 1. Always maintain an entrepreneurial mindset. Keep pioneering and innovating instead of relying on resources or past achievements.
  • Champion diversity and inclusion. Value individual differences, and focus on people’s unique strengths.
  • Be candid and clear. Speak your mind. Drive communication and form conclusions with facts, instead of assumptions or emotions.
  • Seek truth and be pragmatic. Be an independent thinker. Seek direct experience and firsthand data and information.
  • Be courageous and aim for the highest. Dare to take calculated risks for bigger gains with a focus on return on investment.
  • Grow together. Show patience and resilience in the face of short-term fluctuations. Solve problems together.

Consider how your experiences reflect these values so that you can incorporate them into your answers.

Final Hiring Manager Screen

Your final interview will be with a hiring manager or in some cases, a senior team member. Think of this interview as a step up from the earlier hiring manager screen, as many of the questions you might encounter are similar. However, this interview tends to focus more on the practical details of working at TikTok.

For instance, during this stage, our source shared, “My hiring manager said, ‘You are going to work cross-functionally and across time zones. Are you OK working in this sort of scenario?’”

Be prepared for primarily behavioral questions, but with some conceptual themes. If you’re asked about previous technical work, make sure you articulate the “why” behind what you do—not just the end product. TikTok is looking for fast, innovative, and driven data scientists, and this interview is the final assessment of this.

Below are a few questions you can expect at this stage:

Tips and Strategies

  • Stay flexible: Since TikTok’s team members are distributed across the world, your interview might take place at a non-traditional working hour. Maintain an enthusiastic attitude about the process and a willingness to be flexible, as this can be a great way to set yourself apart as a positive and hard-working prospective hire.
  • Emphasize your experience working cross-culturally: Highlight your ability to work with diverse stakeholders, as demonstrating your strength in cross-cultural collaboration can distinguish you as a strong candidate. Also be sure to clearly articulate your answers and share relevant past leadership experiences.
  • Choose your position wisely: TikTok advises candidates to apply to no more than two roles at once, so it’s critical to make sure that the role you’re applying for is your best fit. On TikTok’s job board, search for keywords related to your competencies, such as programming languages and machine learning frameworks, to enhance your application and demonstrate your suitability for the role.

If you want more interview prep support, consider booking a coaching session with a data scientist. Your coach can assess your skills, make recommendations for your prep, and coach you to improve your answers.
