Senior Associate, Strategic Finance Interview Experience

LinkedIn·Mid Level / L4
The case discussions were more about me leading the entire discussion. They were more or less like a fly on the wall, monitoring how I would behave in that situation.

Interview process

The loop ran for 2+ months and ended up being six to seven rounds with no take-home: recruiter screen, hiring managers, case-heavy interviews, and separate behaviorals. No take-home, surprisingly! Almost every round blended casing and behavioral, so it never felt like I could fully switch my brain off one side or the other. The interviews themselves were candidate-led, with one interviewer feeling super collaborative and another much more reserved and watchful, especially in the cases. I feel like the biggest theme across the whole process was that LinkedIn cared a lot about story, stakeholder management, and whether I was actually AI-native versus just saying buzzwords.

Interview tips

I would not wing behavioral at this level. I knew the values ahead of time, so I built a question bank for each one, mapped real stories from my resume to those buckets, and practiced them out loud with a timer because once you go past five minutes people lose the thread. I also always took 10 seconds before answering even behavioral questions, jotted down STAR in shorthand, and closed with the takeaway or lesson learned so I did not ramble. For prep, I would still put more weight on technical, but not less than 40 percent of my effort on behavioral because that is where they really grill you. Also, use AI as a thought partner, but do not let it make you sound polished in a fake way.

Company culture

LinkedIn really means it when they say it is "one company". The recruiter had no issue sharing me across multiple teams because they worked closely together and reported up into the same leadership chain, so they saw it as a win either way instead of teams competing for talent. They were also very intentional about the values they were hiring for and actually told me the main buckets up front, which helped me with the behavioral rounds.

Questions asked

Overview

The behavioral rounds were the hardest part for me because they drilled into four explicit areas they had told me up front: role-related knowledge, cognitive ability, ownership and leadership, and stakeholder management.

Specific questions asked

Tell me about a time you used data and analytics to drive a significant business decision.

If you were solving that same problem today using AI, which tools would you use?

How would you quantify the impact in time or money?

What pain points did you run into when using that tool?

These answers got pushed well beyond a normal STAR story. I had to ground them in something real, then explain how I would solve the same problem today using AI tools, why I would choose that tool, what pain points I had seen, and how I would quantify the impact. They were clearly checking whether I had actually used these tools directly and could speak concretely about the tradeoffs.

How do you manage competing priorities across cross-functional teams, especially when people have different working styles or you disagree with a coworker?

How do you find middle ground when a partner works very differently from you?

A lot of the behavioral pressure was around stakeholder management. They wanted to know whether I had really worked cross-functionally before, how I handled competing deadlines, and whether I could convince different teams to support the work without just escalating everything. It felt less like they wanted a perfect answer and more like they were testing whether I had enough real operating maturity to be trusted in a strategy ops role.
