Product Manager, AI Assistant Interview Experience
By the product case round, I had more of an idea that they aren't very clear themselves and they want the person to clarify for them the role, the scope. They wanted someone very, very deep in growth and very, very deep in product.
Interview process
I did three rounds: recruiter, a conversation with a senior product person, and then a 45-minute product case. My biggest takeaway was that the process felt stitched together, like a fast-growing startup still iterating on hiring, because the rounds did not feel very coordinated and the scope of the role kept shifting. The job description undersold how much growth they actually wanted. To me, they were really looking for someone who could do zero-to-one product, growth, user understanding, and a lot of operational heavy lifting all in one role. I got rejected after the case before the planned final round, which was supposed to be a take-home assignment plus culture fit.

Interview tips
I would prep this in two layers. First, know your own product stories really well: numbers, what problem you solved, what failed, what you changed, and how you worked cross-functionally. Second, for the case round, be ready for extreme ambiguity. I would practice cases where the interviewer gives you very little, and I would get comfortable stating assumptions, narrowing the scope yourself, and leading the conversation instead of waiting for hints. Also, do not assume this is a pure PM role. I would prep for growth questions even if the job description barely mentions it.
Company culture
My read was that Mistral is still figuring out its hiring process as it scales. It felt like a big startup that grew very fast, so some things were not well documented and the interviewers were not always aligned on what had already happened in the process. I also felt they were hiring for a much broader profile than the posting suggested: not just a PM, but someone who can own zero-to-one, growth, and a lot of messy operational work. On the company side, I also got the sense that their Europe-based positioning matters a lot, especially around data handling and government or regulated use cases, and that shows up in how they think about the product and market.
Questions asked
Overview
The recruiter screen felt pretty balanced to me: part standard logistics, part motivation for Mistral and AI, and part checking whether I had actually worked on prosumer and genAI products before.

Specific questions asked
Why are you interested in Mistral and this prosumer role?
It was not a grilling-style round. It was more me showing that I understood the company, the role, and why I wanted to work on this kind of AI product.
Yes, and I think that made this round pretty easy. I had already worked on products for freelancer-type users and had also worked on a genAI product before, so when she asked, I could answer directly with relevant examples. Because my background already matched those areas, she did not go much deeper.
