Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Experience

Stripe
The coding round explicitly let me use AI, but they were not looking for a one-shot prompt. They were judging whether I could break the work down, catch the model when it went sideways, and run my own review loop while still shipping.

Interview process

This was a really quick process for me: recruiter chat, two technical phone screens, then four final-round interviews. The early rounds covered broad web-dev fundamentals, debugging, and a small API-to-UI coding task that later got expanded in the onsite. The final loop felt more performative than most because there was clearly a hidden rubric beyond just solving the prompt, especially around communication, customer instincts, and how I use AI while coding. The coding round explicitly allowed AI, but they seemed to care much more about whether I could break work down, steer the model, and review it critically than whether I could one-shot a solution. The behavioral side also cared a lot about why Stripe and whether I really wanted a customer-facing role like this.

Interview tips

I would over-prepare my why Stripe because that seemed essential. I would also have a clear best practice for each final round: a PM-ish way to scope projects, a deliberate AI coding agent pattern, and a crisp way to handle the customer-support simulation. The system design itself was fairly straightforward, but fitting all of that into 45 minutes to an hour and still making it look thoughtful is the hard part. You kind of have to embody the specific type of person Stripe wants, not just answer the questions.

Company culture

The whole interview felt pretty performative to me because there was definitely a hidden rubric beyond the surface-level problem. They seemed to be screening hard for culture fit, motivation for Stripe specifically, communication skills, and whether I could operate in a very customer-facing way. Even the coding evaluation felt less like pure coding and more like judgment under AI-assisted workflows, like can I plan, steer, and critique instead of just generate code. It also felt like they want someone who can switch between engineer, PM, and client support modes really fast.

Questions asked

Overview

One final round was basically a scoping and prioritization exercise where I had to act a little like a PM and explain what a team could realistically get done in two weeks.

Specific questions asked

Given a sheet of project asks, what would you prioritize, what would you not prioritize, and what is reasonable for a team to accomplish in two weeks?

What trade-offs are you making?
