Updated by Stripe candidates
With the rapid growth of ecommerce and digital finance comes an increasing demand for internet-based financial infrastructure. Since its establishment in 2010, Stripe has emerged as a global leader in financial technology, offering solutions for payment processing, revenue and finance automation, and banking as a service.
If you're passionate about the intersection of financial services and technology, a role in Stripe product management (PM) could be a great fit for you. In this guide, we dig deep into the intensive Stripe PM interview loop and offer tips on how to set yourself apart as a candidate.
This guide was written with the help of a product manager at Stripe.
What does a Stripe PM do?
Powering global ecommerce with over 250 million API requests per day, Stripe offers a vast array of products. The result is a diverse user base that includes:
- large enterprises that rely on Stripe for payment processing and fraud/risk management,
- individual customers who trust Stripe as a secure payment method, and
- freelancers that use Stripe’s invoice system for client payments.
Given its wide customer base, Stripe thrives on the maintenance, security, and innovation of its many product ecosystems. It’s here that product managers play an integral role.
Stripe PMs are strong communicators who excel in business operations, external-facing products, and results-oriented action plans. The internet is a fast and dynamic space, and the work at Stripe reflects this. While each role varies according to its specific function, Stripe PMs generally collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, account management, business development, finance, and more to deliver, expand, and enhance the products and infrastructure under their purview.

What are the typical job requirements for a Stripe PM?
Although Stripe offers internships and new grad opportunities, its work environment is generally considered more ideal for mid-career PMs. Stripe PMs must have at least 5-8 years of experience in a product role, preferably management.
Unlike other companies, there are few or no education requirements. While a college degree in fields of study like computer science or business is recommended, Stripe is most interested in candidates with the specific skill sets required for particular roles.
Below are hard and soft skills that Stripe values in PM candidates:
Hard Skills
- SaaS GTM strategy. Making sure products are pointed in the right direction at Stripe is a huge part of being a PM. Before applying, study how to build an effective go-to-market strategy before resources are invested into a product. This will set you apart as a candidate and show that you are always looking for ways to save time and money for the company.
- Familiarity with APIs. As a company with hundreds of diverse financial services, understanding how applications communicate with one another with requests and responses is key to being a successful owner within the larger Stripe ecosystem.
- Product roadmap development. Day-to-day responsibilities are very important at Stripe, but so is the overarching vision of its products. Stripe PMs must be able to outline and clearly articulate both the short- and long-term priorities, goals, and direction of their product(s) over time.

Soft Skills
- Empathy. A fundamental part of product management at Stripe is keeping the user experience at the heart of all decision-making. Financial services are all about the customer, and user input should be constantly incorporated into the product throughout its life cycle.
- Cross-functional leadership. Engineers, accountants, designers, and more all work beside Stripe PMs to build the product vision. Candidates should be able to point to diverse leadership experience on their resume.
- Flexibility. Unexpected user feedback and misaligned expectations can shift project timelines. At Stripe, this is all part of creating financial tech products. The ability to adapt to new challenges is key to success in a fast-paced company like Stripe.
There are a variety of levels for Stripe PMs based on relevant skills and industry experience, ranging from L2 to L4. Per Levels.Fyi, the current compensation packet for starting Stripe PMs is:
- $256K per year at the L2 level
- $456K per year at the L3 level
- $546K per year at the L4 level
Recommendations before you apply for Stripe PM roles
- Seek referrals. Internal recommendations and referrals go a long way at Stripe, so don’t be afraid to seek out connections on LinkedIn or through Exponent. Building a rapport with a recruiter or someone else in a relevant position can improve your chances of getting past the recruiter screen and into the interview loop.
- Familiarize yourself with the brand. Stripe’s products vary widely, meaning there are dozens of teams involved in their creation and optimization. Whether it’s growth, operations, risk and compliance, or another department, make sure you’re applying to a PM role that suits your interests and qualifications. You should be able to confidently discuss the technicalities of your prospective role.
- Prep for the behavioral round. Leadership and communication skills are a huge aspect of all interviews in the Stripe PM loop. Prepare to share about your past experiences and answer questions with ease. Mock interviews are a great way to practice in advance.
Interview Process
Stripe’s PM interview loop is complex and dense, and can vary based on the candidate.
However, candidates generally begin with a 30-minute screen for recruiters to assess their general communication skills and culture fit at Stripe. From there, candidates move to an interview loop that consists of four 60-minute sessions covering:
- Product Sense
- Technical
- Strategy
- Execution
While these concepts are often mixed throughout the four interviews, we’ve separated them into four sections for ease of learning. These sessions may be remote or in person depending on your location and prospective role.
Recruiter Screen
The first stage of the Stripe interview process is a short recruiter screen. This is primarily to assess your culture fit with the company through behavioral questions and see if you have the necessary skills to be a strong Stripe PM.

In this interview, make sure to show your interest in Stripe and knowledge of Stripe’s current ventures. A great way to do this is to check out Stripe Sessions, a yearly conference where business leaders and builders share product updates, demos, and more about the global internet economy.
You don’t need to be an expert in every Stripe product, but showing a general understanding or an interest in the company can go a long way. Spend extra time researching your specific prospective product ecosystem, and be ready to discuss product strategy and vision from the start.

Product Sense
Product Managers at Stripe are responsible for driving the strategic vision and execution of product initiatives across various domains, including Payments, Risk, Marketing, and more. For instance, they may work closely with the engineering team to make payments more secure for B2B customers, or with the design team to enhance the user experience of Stripe Terminal.
To that end, the product sense interview focuses on your product knowledge and creative instincts. While PMs work with many different roles, major decisions ultimately belong to the PM as product owner. As such, the role requires a strong level of focus and attention to detail.
In these interviews, Stripe is looking for:
- Fast but intentional decision-making
- Your ability to empathize with the user
- Design choices that align with Stripe’s brand
- Prioritization of different tasks and needs
While some of the other interviews might go deeper into the technicalities of product management, this interview type is all about displaying high-level improvement ideas and articulating a product vision. Expect many questions to be either explicitly about Stripe or ecommerce, as digital financial services are the company’s strong focus.
